PROMS SPECTACULAR 2007 PROMS SPECTACULAR
Imagine a beautiful summer’s evening. You’re relaxing with family and friends in the grounds of a lovely English country house, a glass of champagne in your hand. On stage the Orchestra prepare to play. The evocative sound of a Merlin engine as a Spitfire flies low over the trees behind the stage is the signal for the concert to begin. A magical night of stirring music and rousing Proms songs lies ahead, culminating in a magnificent fireworks finale. Historic Sudeley Castle and Gardens provide a romantic backdrop for the British Concert Orchestra in this stunningly beautiful setting, just a few miles from Cheltenham.
Soon after you arrive and tuck into your pre-concert picnics, you’ll be entertained by the excellent PolySteel Band playing a selection of tunes guaranteed to get you into Proms mood nice and early. Just before 8pm look out for the arrival of the famous Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. This trio of historic aircraft will perform a superlative flying display choreographed to a medley of stirring tunes performed by the British Concert Orchestra. The highly accomplished BCO is the creation of music maestro Frank Renton. Presenter of BBC Radio 2’s Friday night Listen to the Band programme, Frank is our Conductor and Compere for the evening.
After the BBMF’s farewell fly-past, the concert progresses to a series of moving classical pieces and excerpts from such smash-hit shows as Phantom of the the Opera and Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. Leading tenor Richard Coxon (who will sing Nessun Dorma from Turandot) and soprano Deborah Myers add to the evening’s musical magic. The second half of the programme includes more renditions of much-loved music before, as dusk falls and the sky darkens, traditional Proms songs such as Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory bring the evening to a rousing climax. The concert concludes with a fantastic Fireworks Finale.
A splendid evening is promised that will live long in the memory.
